The Friends of St. Peter's Church

The Friends of St. Peter's Church was formed nearly 40 years ago with the aim of raising money for St. Peter's Church which would be separate from the Parochial Church Council Finances.

The Rev'd John Canham, the Vicar of Raunds at the time, arranged a weekly raffle and other members sold raffle tickets around the town.  The draw was made after the Sunday Service.  It was very informal.

Also over the years, quite substantial sums were raised by the resale of cardboard boxes donated by local traders and manufacturers.  These were stored and moved on by Mr Laurie Weal and Mr Mike Turner.  This income is no longer available.  When the weekly raffle stopped, Mr Danny Evans undertook to organise a larger, more formal one for Christmas one year.  This proved so successful that it has become an annual event, the Christmas Grand Prize Draw and Coffee Morning.

Mrs Elsie Cockburn was the first Secretary/Treasurer and she, with Mr John Chatburn as Chairman and other members organised a regular Whist Drive in the former Parish Rooms.  The Friends now arrange some social events such as Shrove Tuesday "Pancake Parties" and a Beetle Drive and hope to continue with a varied pattern of activities.

The "49" Club based on the Bonus Ball of the National Lottery and run by Mr Roger Bird, is providing a prize every week and a substantial sum for the Friends as well.

Some of the money raised has been used to keep St. Peter's Church clean.  Other items purchased include Baptism Anniversary Cards for the young children in Raunds, a votive candle stand and window guards on the church windows.  Most recently we provided the funds to update the sound system so that everyone can hear well in the church and a cabinet to house the system and funds towards notice boards and redecorations of the Vestry and adjacent passage.

There is a membership scheme (members subscribe £5 per year), to build up a fund to help with maintaining St. Peter's Church and anyone can become a member.  It is not necessary to come to Church to become a member.  About half our members do not attend Church services.  To do this, please contact the Chairman, Mrs Rita Chantrell or the Secretary/Treasurer Mrs Ann Webster.

Any building needs regular maintenance to keep it structurally safe and protected for the purpose for which it was built and is used.

St Peter's Church is a large and very old building.  Most of its construction is over seven hundred years old and needs specialized care and protection so that it may continue to be used for its original designation; namely, to the Glory of God, and for the benefit of the people of the Raunds.

The Friends of St Peter's Church is an organization that began over thirty years ago with the aim of raising funds for the care and maintenance of the church, and it has provided a variety of items for associated practical purposes.  This has been possible with the support of the people who have joined our membership scheme, to which members contribute an annual donation, and those who support our other fundraising activities, such as the Ceilidh and the Band Concert as well as the Christmas Prize Draw.

If you would like to support the aims of the Friends of St Peter's Church Raunds, please complete the form below and return them to the Secretary/Treasurer Mrs Rita Chantrell, at 3 Nene Close, Raunds, NN9 6SH (01933 389 457)
