A Night at the Opera

Concert  -  A Night  at  the Opera

Jonathan and DamianWell, what a night it was on Friday 21st September, the church was packed to hear a concert of wonderful music performed by Hargrave’s resident opera singers Damian Thantrey and Jonathan Gunthorpe. They had invited soprano Kate Valentine, currently performing with the Welsh National Opera, and acclaimed pianist Caroline Dowdle to join them in a superb programme of folk songs, opera, operetta and music by Noel Coward, Gershwin and Rodgers & Hammerstein. There really was something for everyone. The performances made imaginative use of the church as a stage, and there were some spine tingling moments, from when Jonathan opened the concert singing from above on the bell ringing platform, to a superb candle lit rendering of the aria Ave Maria from Verdi’s Otello by Kate, and will we ever forget the comic threats of Jonathan and Damian performing ‘The Bold Gendarmes’ by Offenbach.

At the conclusion of the concert, Bouquets were presented to Caroline and Kate by Sophia and Amelia Farrington, and Trinity Pollard-Strutt, presented Jonathan and Damian with bottles of wine. A retiring collection was held in aid of Thomas’s Fund, a local charity chosen by Jonathan and Damian, which brings music therapy to severely ill children and young people. The collection raised £450 which was forwarded to the charity.

The PCC would like to thank Jonathan and Damian, and all the ladies who made the interval refreshments, for making it such a wonderful and joyful occasion.

The concert was organised to celebrate the completion of the re-ordering works in church, and it really was a truly memorable celebration.
